Allen's Gaming History (Extended Mix) [July 2026]

Welcome to Gaming History (Extended Mix)! This is a video series that serves as an "extended" version of #MonarchyGamingHistory, a weekly segment on the Tuesday (tech news) edition of the Morning Monarchy radio show (hosted by James E. Pilato of Media Monarchy).

Initially I had planned for this series to be a one-episode-per-week series, following after that Tuesday's #MonarchyGamingHistory segment. I realise now that two episodes per week is the sweet spot, which would allow for episodes that can cover "honourable mentions" or subjects which I don't think would make it on the segment, as well as events which I've missed and would like to shine a spotlight on. These can be featured on episodes released either on Mondays or Tuesdays (latest) while the episodes released later in the week feature what I would've prepared for the segment.

Episode 0: Nintendo 64's 30th Anniversary

30 years ago on the 23rd of June 1996, Nintendo released their next generation console the Nintendo 64 in Japan. Three games were launched with the console: Saikyō Habu Shōgi, Pilotwings 64 and Super Mario 64.

I had a chance to play Final Fight: Streetwise either in late 2006 or some time in 2007, thanks to one of my friends who had the game back in the old neighbourhood. His father had gone overseas and brought back a PS2 which came with this game as well as Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and King Kong (if there were other games I've forgotten them now 😅). This PS2 wasn't just a normal machine, it was a rare "chipped" PS2 which been modified to play original discs and copied discs from either NTSC or PAL regions. THAT was the PS2 you would hear about once in a while and it was the PS2 one would wish they had. I did get one a few years later, but let me save that story for some other time 😁. At the time that we played Streetwise we thought it was a cool game. None of the other games that we had back then were anything like it, except for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as far as Streetwise being semi-open world goes. Interestingly enough, the "chipped" PS2 that I got later came with another beat 'em game which was similar in style to Streetwise - Namco's Urban Reign (and wouldn't you know it, that game came out a few months before Streetwise!). Even though Streetwise got shafted in the reviews, I'd still dive into it one more time now (although it would have to be played via emulator because sadly that old "chipped" PS2 of mine has been dead and gone since 2012). And don't forget that super cool soundtrack! At least that still holds up now haha.

Initially released as a PlayStation Portable exclusive in October 2005, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories would get released on the PlayStation 2 in June of 2006 in North America.

I'd hoped I would find some interviews with members of the development team that worked on the game but just the IGN interview linked above popped up and next to it was the Barcode Studia interview which I found interesting enough. My friend Alex played LCS on PS2 back in the day and he enjoyed it, while I played the PS2 version of Vice City Stories and had a fun time with that one. You were more likely to find friends or neighbours or strangers with a PS2 than anyone who had a PSP here so I don't know how much of an impact the PSP made by the time it got succeeded by the PSP Vita. Looked super cool though, perhaps we missed out big time.
