Allen's Gaming History (Extended Mix) [July 2026]
Welcome to Gaming History (Extended Mix)! This is a video series that serves as an "extended" version of #MonarchyGamingHistory, a regular segment on the Tuesday (tech news) edition of the Morning Monarchy radio show (hosted by James E. Pilato of Media Monarchy).
Initially I had planned for this series to be a one-episode-per-week series, following after that Tuesday's #MonarchyGamingHistory segment. I realise now that two episodes per week is the sweet spot, which would allow for episodes that can cover "honourable mentions" or subjects which I don't think would make it on the segment, as well as events which I've missed and would like to shine a spotlight on. These can be featured on episodes released either on Mondays or Tuesdays (latest) while the episodes released later in the week feature what I would've prepared for the segment.

Episode 0: Nintendo 64's 30th Anniversary

I had a chance to play Final Fight: Streetwise either in late 2006 or some time in 2007, thanks to one of my friends who had the game back in the old neighbourhood. His father had gone overseas and brought back a PS2 which came with this game as well as Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and King Kong (if there were other games I've forgotten them now 😅). This PS2 wasn't just a normal machine, it was a rare "chipped" PS2 which been modified to play original discs and copied discs from either NTSC or PAL regions. THAT was the PS2 you would hear about once in a while and it was the PS2 one would wish they had. I did get one a few years later, but let me save that story for some other time 😁. At the time that we played Streetwise we thought it was a cool game. None of the other games that we had back then were anything like it, except for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as far as Streetwise being semi-open world goes. Interestingly enough, the "chipped" PS2 that I got later came with another beat 'em game which was similar in style to Streetwise - Namco's Urban Reign (and wouldn't you know it, that game came out a few months before Streetwise!). Even though Streetwise got shafted in the reviews, I'd still dive into it one more time now (although it would have to be played via emulator because sadly that old "chipped" PS2 of mine has been dead and gone since 2012). And don't forget that super cool soundtrack! At least that still holds up now haha.

I'd hoped I would find some interviews with members of the development team that worked on the game but just the IGN interview linked above popped up and next to it was the Barcode Studia interview which I found interesting enough. My friend Alex played LCS on PS2 back in the day and he enjoyed it, while I played the PS2 version of Vice City Stories and had a fun time with that one. You were more likely to find friends or neighbours or strangers with a PS2 than anyone who had a PSP here so I don't know how much of an impact the PSP made by the time it got succeeded by the PSP Vita. Looked super cool though, perhaps we missed out big time.

Unfortunately I couldn't any interviews with members of the tri-Ace team about the game, what came up instead were interviews with the team about some of the other Star Ocean games like Till the End of Time. Even on Dailymotion I checked and mostly found gameplay videos from a couple of years ago so no luck there. My hope had been to put together a video that is a decent mix of reviews, interviews, a commercial for the game, maybe a trailer for the gmae as well plus the usual YouTuber documentaries and retrospectives. The best I could find were YouTuber reviews and a couple of retrospectives which I thought are worth a watch. A few other videos that I found did not make it into the episode, I'll list them as honourable watchables down below for anyone who might be interested. Like many people outside of Japan, I did not know about Star Ocean until many years later when I first found out about Till the End of Time for the PS2 and thought that was the first game in the series. Just the name was enough to pique my interest, many other games have cool titles like that which hook you in as soon as you see it and you wonder what the game could be about. I never had the chance to play it, none of my friends had it too so I must've found out about it online.

I didn't get to play Arkanoid in the arcade, as I'm trying to think back now I don't remember seeing it in any of the arcades that I used to visit back in the day. However, I did get to play it on one of those knockoff TV game consoles known as the Terminator:
Maybe some of you remember it? Or how about the Golden China? The Game Station? Polystation? Polystation 2 even?
Terminator and Golden China were from my time haha, the other three came years later of course. Each of them played these cassette-shaped cartridges that were packed with games, many of them were the NES ports of popular arcade titles like Arkanoid. It was a fun game that you could dive into for a short time until you died or got bored then tried the likes of Super Mario Bros. or Adventure Island or other cool platformers. Just like Tetris, I didn't really appreciate Arkanoid until years later and here we are, 40 years after Arkanoid debuted and it still holds up.

In the previous episode I wrote a bit about how the names of some games can just grab your attention from the moment you hear them, and I'd say the Kingdom Hearts series is another example of such games. The connection to Disney helped too because I was a fan of Disney when I was little. Unfortunately like with many of the games which will be showcased in Gaming History, I didn't get a chance to play Kingdom Hearts II. I played a bit of the first game at my friend Alex's house (he had borrowed the game from another friend) and then some years later I played Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days. Although I lean towards turn-based RPGs, I didn't mind Kingdom Hearts' Action RPG style for the battle system. It just took me a little bit to adjust to the controls while trying to keep up with what was happening on the screen haha. Had a similar experience when I tried out Final Fantasy XII for the first time (which I've just found out was released in March of 2006 in Japan then in October 2006 in North America!). Kingdom Hearts has remained a series of games whose story and characters kept me interested over the years and thanks to the massive video from Suggestive Gaming which I've listed among the Honourable Watchables below, I got an understanding of what the series is about.
I hope people will like this episode, it is an example of the kind of videos that I want to do for Gaming History in which there are trailers, commercials, reviews, interviews, documentary-style retrospectives or deep dives and any other interesting extras related to the topic of the episode. But I understand that I won't always find lots of material like that, I'll just work with what I can dig up.
