Friday 9 October 2026
In this episode, we go back 40 years to September/October 1986 for the North American launch of Sega's Master System video game console.
**I say September/October 1986 because I couldn't find the exact date for the launch. Wikipedia and the source that it cites say September, while October is mentioned in one of the videos featured in the episode because there was a delay in meeting the September date and so the consoles arrived on shelves some time in October. If I do find out the date, I'll be sure to update these Show Notes.

Hopefully people won't roll their eyes too much for the mashup intro that I threw together at the start of the episode 😅😂 it's part Sega Master System bootup sound and part Sega Japanese commercial signature "Seegaa!".
My corner of the planet was not among the major places where the Master System was a giant hit like in Europe or Brazil, in fact I have yet to see a Master System in real life here. What I have seen was an NES: one which my dad brought home from an auction in the late 90's and then there was another NES which a dude in another neighbourhood had. His was a PAL region machine while ours was an NTSC machine. Sorry Sega, but thumbs up for having some cool looking games for that 8-bit machine though.

30 years ago this month, on 31 October 1996, the flight simulator video game SimCopter was released by Maxis for Microsoft Windows in North America.
**The game's Wiki page has 20 November 1996 as the release date without any citation linked to it so I have no idea where that date was taken from. Just doing a quick search will show sites like GameFAQs and IMDB having 31 October 1996 as the release date instead.

SimCopter Review
I had wanted this episode to be about the 30th Anniversary of another "oddball" game from the 90's that you either played back then or have heard of before - The Pink Panther: Passport to Peril. But after failing to find enough videos to do some justice and maybe get a half hour episode, I decided to cover SimCopter, which would've been for Episode 25. Less than five YouTuber review videos popped up amid a lot of gameplay videos and soundtrack videos for Passport to Peril. No major outlet video reviews or even an obscure retrospective video or something. I've chosen yet another 90's game for Episode 25, at least this one is guaranteed to have lots of video material. As for Passport to Peril, I'll save it for December - there's an idea for that month which I'm floating around in my head, so watch this space!
SimCopter was one of six games which came in a Maxis six-pack of titles that I got in the early 2000's. The other games were SimIsle, SimSafari, SimTower, SimCity 2000 and Streets of SimCity. SimIsle wasn't very interesting to me so I didn't play it that much; SimSafari and SimTower were more interesting but just fun to play in short sessions; SimCity 2000 I might have enjoyed more if I hadn't been exposed to SimCity 3000 first! 😅😂 A family friend's son had it and after seeing that then SimCity 2000 I couldn't really appreciate it as much as I should have. So that left SimCopter and SoSC, which I spent more time with. This was a few years before I played a Grand Theft Auto game so these two games may very well have been my first exposure to sandbox-style games that had amazing soundtracks. Sure, the graphics are absolutely terrible now but back then i didn't mind them, especially for SimCopter. The missions were engaging and I just liked hopping into a helicopter and flying around a city which seemed "alive" with activity. Shout out to Jerry Martin and those who worked with him to compose the music, those songs still hold up well enough 30 years later 👍
P.S. ...and speaking of the music, I added in the background music for the Just All in One Resource and SimCopter 64 gameplay videos. I thought that made for better footage than just having the sound of the helicopter chopping through the air with nothing to back it up 😁

**I'm putting out the episode today because I didn't get it ready in time yesterday. There was an electrical fault on Thursday for most of the day so my chance to work on the video was the day after. Just a lousy ending to yet another grind of a week.
This takes me back to the arcade days of the late 90's-early 2000's here, when the PS1 was still the hottest thing around (just before the PS2 showed up and blew everything away haha). There was that sense of wonder and discovery that someone has when seeing amazing games that they hadn't seen before and they want to dive right in and find out what these games are about. That's what I had for Tomb Raider. I didn't know who Lara Croft was or what her story was about, but just seeing her moving about in a cave somewhere, running, jumping and firing at enemies with dual pistols was enough to make me curious and interested in playing the game. Even when I think back now, I don't think I cared very much that this was a game in which you play as a female character, it was what she could do on-screen that did the job of selling how cool the game was. The arcade was the only place where I played Tomb Raider, none of my friends had it or any of the many games which came after that first one so I lost track of the franchise until the early 2010s when I encountered Tomb Raider: Underworld. It was one of the games which came with the "chipped" PS2 that I had traded my PAL PS2 for. Just like Crash Bandicoot, I wasn't aware of how long Tomb Raider had been going on for and all the things which had happened to the series, such as the reboot, the remakes and so on until many years later. For a while Tomb Raider for me had just been the first game and the pair of Angelina Jolie movies, so I've got a lot of catching up to do.
If I manage to find that Tomb Raider: Underworld disc from wherever its hiding, I'll post a photo of it here.

I already know that the video won't breeze through the YouTube copyright check unscathed 😂 just a single trailer alone had a licensed song which the checker will pick up, so what more the rest of the video which has other trailers, commercials and reviews? Beyond ridiculous.
With the big release for GTA 6 set for next month and this week being for 20th Anniversary-themed episodes of Gaming History Ext. I thought it would be a good time to cover Vice City Stories. As I mentioned in the Show Notes for Liberty City Stories, I didn't get a chance to play that game but I did get to play VCS and enjoyed it. Sure, it didn't have a gripping story and several memorable characters like what Vice City had, but I thought it still had enough packed in to be worth someone's time, whether they played the PSP version or played the PS2 version like I did. Having played GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas, I could appreciate VCS for what it had to offer.
Shout out to TheJizzy for the gameplay footage, I hope he won't mind that I added music to the points where Vic was using a vehicle. It just sucks that for several years now YouTubers have had to self-censor their own content just to avoid YouTube flagging their videos due to stupid copyright, and for games like GTA which have great music in them, it makes Let's Play GTA videos not as cool as they should be. I guess it's safe to say that a lot of GTA 6 LP videos are going to be given the same treatment.

It's been over a decade since I last played Final Fantasy XII, and I can admit I did not play it for very long because (A) I wasn't a big fan of the non-turn-based battle system at the time and (B) I had no idea what I was doing because there wasn't a guide with the game. It was a gift from a friend of friend who didn't have an NTSC PS2 to play the game and since I had the "chipped" PS2 by then I could play it. As I was putting this episode together and getting a refresher on the game and a better understanding of the battle system, I'm not as negative towards it now as I was before and I'd gladly give Final Fantasy XII another go. I blame Final Fantasy X for making me dislike XII's battle system 😂
